How to Save Money

Does saving money feel impossible to you? Are you saving enough?

Saving money can sometimes feel impossible, especially with the rising cost of living. For a lot of families, putting money aside every month can be a real challenge.

Weekly grocery bills are getting higher, monthly expenses are adding up, and transportation costs can take a large part of the family budget.

Saving money doesn’t happen overnight, and it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to save large amounts.

You don’t have to save a lot to get started. Often, starting small can help a lot, and your savings can build over time.

Why Should We Save?

Saving is for everyone, whether you are able to save large or small amounts. No matter how much you are able to save, putting money aside regularly can benefit you in the future.

It can help you work towards your future goals, such as a family holiday, a new car or saving for a house deposit.

Saving can give you greater stability and financial security when the unexpected happens. Having savings set aside can provide you with support when you need it and help you feel more secure about the future.

Money Habits That Work

In this post, I have put together some helpful tips and ideas on how you can save money.

Saving money doesn’t only mean putting money aside each month. There are many different ways to save, and sometimes saving money is about changing how you earn, spend and manage your money.

You can save on groceries, earn extra money, cut unnecessary expenses and bad spending habits, downgrade certain purchases, or simply use a different money-saving rule or strategy.

Here are some practical ways you can start saving money:

1.Earn more money

One way to improve your finances is to increase the amount of money coming into your household. This can happen by simply taking on a side job. Here are a few ideas for what you can do:

  • Delivery driver- not only can you deliver packages and parcels, but you can also earn extra money by doing some food deliveries.
  • Take extra part-time job- check around the area where you live for weekend jobs, or work-from-home jobs you can do in your free time.
  • Pet sitting or babysitting- ask neighbours and friends if they need pet sitting or babysitting.
  • Sell crafts- why not try to start a small business that will earn you some extra cash by doing something you enjoy? it can be card making or jewellery, or anything you have a passion for. You could turn this into a small business.

2.Automate your savings

Instead of waiting until the end of the month to see how much money you have left to save, one of the easiest ways to save is to set up an automatic transfer to your savings account when you get paid.

You can choose a small amount that you are comfortable with, and you don’t have to worry about setting it aside every month.

Automating your savings can help you stay consistent and make saving part of your monthly routine.

3.Downgrade your big expenses

One of the easiest ways to save money is to look at your biggest regular expenses. Ask yourself: Can you cut them down? Is there something you can change?

For example, do you have a car loan that takes up a large part of your monthly budget? Do you live in a large house with high bills?

If you are driving a car that takes a significant amount of your monthly budget, you could consider changing to a cheaper car. Look for something that costs you less each month but still does the job you need it to do.

The same idea can apply to other big expenses you have. If there is something significant coming out of your monthly budget, take a look and see if you can downsize, switch to a cheaper option, or reduce the cost.

4.Trim monthly expenses

Regularly review your monthly subscriptions, TV and phone bills, internet and gas providers.

Check if you could change to a new provider or get a cheaper deal with your current one. Regular checks can save you money and also stop you from paying unnecessary subscriptions.

5.Pay in cash

Use the envelope system. If you are a clothes-shopping lover or you have any other spending habits, try the cash envelope system.

Take the money out in cash and put it in an envelope. Every time you want to shop, use the money from the envelope. When you spend all the money, that’s it; you are not allowed to spend any more.

6. High-interest savings account

One of the easiest ways to earn extra money is to put your current savings into a high-interest savings account.

Check with your bank to see what interest they offer on their savings accounts and pick the one that will earn you the most interest on your savings.

7. Use coupons, cash back and discount codes system

Recently we discovered a cashback app. Every time we shop online, which we do a lot, we do it through the app and we receive cashback. Little by little, it builds up over time.

Also, many shops offer loyalty cards, and you can save money when you shop. The cards let you earn rewards, get discounts, or buy certain items at a lower price.

8. Meal plan

Groceries take a very large part of the monthly budget, so planning your meals ahead can be a way to save. When you have a meal plan for the week ahead, you are less likely to buy something you don’t need and less likely to overspend.

A simple way to meal plan is to write a menu for the week, with options of what you would like to eat and ideas for what you can cook with the products you already have at home.

Then write down a list of products you need to buy and do your shopping only from the list. It may take some time to get into the habit, but once you do, it will become easier.

9.Learn to cook

Ready meals and takeaways are very convenient, but can become expensive, especially if you buy them regularly.

Learning to cook from scratch can not only save you money, but you will also have more control over what you are eating and what goes into your meal.

You can choose your ingredients, make larger portions and freeze them for busy days.

10.Shop around the shops

Don’t always just shop from the same shop. Check what other shops are available in the area where you live. Check prices and offers in different shops. Some shops sell the same products at better prices.

11.Bulk buy if it makes sense

Bulk buying is good, but only if you will use the items.

We recently started shopping at a big supermarket near us, where we can buy in bulk, including meat, toiletries, cleaning products, and sanitary products.

This has had a significant impact on our weekly grocery spending, and we will definitely continue to shop this way. I can honestly say our weekly grocery bill has gone down by 50%, and we only bulk buy every two to three months.

12.Don’t just buy brands

I honestly don’t see the point in buying branded products or clothes; the only thing that’s branded is my leggings (due to how tall I am).

Everything else is just not necessary.

Your style changes, your body changes, and something that’s trendy today may not be trendy tomorrow. Spending a lot of money on something that you can find cheaper and use for the same purpose is a waste of money.

13.Budget everything

If you want to get better at managing your money, you have to budget everything. You need to know where your money is going. Budgeting is not just about every big transaction; it is about keeping an eye on everything.

Keep track of every receipt and online transaction, and monitor every regular payment.

Take some time each week or month to review your spending. Look at your bills, subscriptions, groceries, and everyday purchases and compare them with your budget.

14.Learn how to say NO

Learning how to say no can be an important part of saving. If something is not in your budget or is not a priority for you, you are allowed to say no.

Learning how to say no is a process, especially if you are used to saying yes all the time, buying things you don’t actually need. But it will become easier.

When you are not sure what to do, just ask yourself these simple questions:

  • Do I really need this?
  • Is it in my budget?
  • Is this something I really want to do or buy?

Taking a moment to think before buying something can help you make better decisions.

Final Thoughts

Saving money doesn’t mean making huge changes to your life or giving up on the things you enjoy.

Saving money is a long process. It is something you will learn over time and become better at as you find what works for you and your family.

Sometimes, small changes to the way you earn, spend, or manage your money can make a big difference over time.

You don’t have to do everything at once. Pick one thing at a time and concentrate on that. Once you feel comfortable with one change, you can move on to the next.

Everyone’s financial situation is different, and some things may be easy for you to change, while others may seem impossible. That’s okay. Take it one step at a time.

The important part is to start somewhere and keep going. You will succeed as long as you keep learning, making changes and working towards your financial goals.
